The nature club has introduced to generate awareness among students about the current environmental issues. Nature club promote the students to love their mother nature and conserve the resources in it. Due to various anthropogenic activities, the environment has subjected to irreparable damage. If we do not take immediate measures to preserve and rescue the nature, it will have a reverse and negative impact upon us. The protection of the environment is the primary concern of the nature club.

The nature club UDYAAN of Al Shifa college of Pharmacy has always been committed to inspire students to think differently about the environment and encourage them to be eco- friendly. Udyaan plays a vital role in directing each members of the society, to be actively instrumental in the sustainable development to safeguard the mother earth. The motto is the promotion of 5R’s (refuse, reduce, reuse, re-purpose and recycle).

Objectives

  • To sensitize, motivate and educate students and staff about environment conservation
  • To create awareness among society about environment and related issues.
  • Organizing activities to reduce pollution.
  • Encouraging efforts to protect and conserve biodiversity in vicinage.
  • Executing small scale projects within the campus.
  • Contributing in environment awareness and conservation drives in collaboration with regional nature clubs and institutes.

World Environment day celebration – Harithakam 2K24

On 5th June 2024, Al Shifa College of Pharmacy, in collaboration with the NSS and UDYAAN Nature Club, celebrated World Environment Day with an enthusiastic sapling plantation drive. The event was aimed at promoting environmental sustainability and enhancing the greenery on the college campus. The event commenced at 2:00 PM with the inauguration by distinguished guests Mr. Muhammed Faisal, Manager SIMS, and Mr. Nahas Abdul Razaq, Manager Relations, Training and Placement Cell. Welcome address was delivered by Mr Jibin Joy and the the
presidential address was delivered by the Principal, Prof. Dr. Dilip C., who emphasized the critical role of trees in maintaining ecological balance and encouraged students to adopt sustainable practices in their daily lives. Following the presidential address, felicitation speeches were given by Prof. Junise V, Vice Principal and NSS District Convenor and Dr. Arun Rasheed, Vice Principal- academics. They appreciated the collaborative efforts of the NSS and UDYAAN Nature Club and encouraged students to continue participating in such noble initiatives.
A variety of saplings, including flowering and fruit-bearing plants, were planted in various locations around the campus. Students played an active role in the event. They prepared nameplates for the plants, cleaned the designated planting areas, and diligently planted the saplings. Their enthusiasm and hard work were evident throughout the activity.NSS sponsored refreshments for
all the students involved in the planting process, providing a well- deserved break and an opportunity to bond over their shared commitment to the environment. Students from the Second sem B Pharm, First Pharm D, and First Diploma and faculty members actively participated in the event.

World Recycling day celebration “Trash to Treasure”

Udyaan nature club in association with NSS have organized world Recycling day celebration “Trash to Treasure” on 18 March 2024 on the theme “Recognizing Youth,” with a focus on the significant role young individuals play in fostering a sustainable future. The event saw enthusiastic participation from students across various disciplines from Pharm D, B. Pharm and D. Pharm. Participants showcased their creativity and ingenuity through a diverse range of projects, demonstrating how discarded materials can be transformed into functional and aesthetically pleasing items. From repurposed plastic bottles to recycled paper art, each exhibit exemplified the potential of recycling in creating value from waste. The products were evaluated by Mrs. Neethu Varghese, Associate professor, department of pharmaceutical chemistry, Mrs. Aswathy, Associate professor, department of pharmaceutics and Mr. Shafin, assistant professor, department of pharmaceutics. Students from the third semester B. Pharm secured the first prize, while the second prize was claimed by students from the fifth semester B. Pharm. The third prize was attained by first-year Pharm D students. Additionally, consolation prizes were awarded to second Pharm D and second D. Pharm students for their active participation. The first prize winners received a cash prize of 1000 rupees, while the second prize winners were awarded 500 rupees. The cash prizes for the winners were sponsored by NSS.

Campus Bird Count

On February 20, 2024, students from the 3rd year of Pharm D, accompanied by Dr. Prasanth SS and Professor Junise V, along with members of Udyaan (Nature Club), embarked on a bird walk as part of the GBBC and Campus Bird Countinitiative. Departing from the APJ Kalam block at 6:15 a.m.Team traversed along the scenic Maniyaneri Kadavu river.
Each student was equipped with a copy of the Kerala Bird Atlas, binoculars, and a camera to enhance their bird watching experience. Utilizing the eBird app, team meticulously recorded bird sightings. Journey commenced with the sight of a black drongo capturing and tossing a fly, setting the tone for an eventful outing. The skies teemed with Indian and palm swiftlets darting across the water, occasionally pausing to drink. Amidst this lively scene, a white-breasted waterhen gracefully navigated the river’s currents. Teams excitement peaked when a Serpent eagle descended from the sky, accompanied by a flock of crows, offering a rare spectacle of nature’s grandeur. Moments later, young cormorants made a sudden appearance, adding to the diversity
of our teams observations. Throughout the excursion, team encountered various avian species, including the purple heron, spotted dove, red-vented bulbul, Rufus tree pies, mynas, and
peafowl.Dr. Prasanth SS elucidated on the importance of bird conservation, monitoring, and the creation of bird atlases, enriching our understanding of ecological stewardship.

Campus Sanitation & Mosquito Eradication Drive

A Campus Sanitation & Mosquito Eradication Drive was organized in the campus as part of Community engagement in association with the NSS Unit and the Youth Red Cross unit. The drive was inaugurated by the Principal, Prof (Dr) TNK Suriyaprakash, in the presence of Prof Junise V (Coordinator, NSS & YRC), Mr Nawas Babu (Administrative Manager) and Dr Linu Mohan (Professor, Department of Pharmacy Practice, and Criteria Head, Criteria 6, KUHS-QAS). The event was inaugurated with a water well cleaning activity, where both the wells in the campus were cleaned and disinfected. This was followed by a campus cleaning drive led by students of 7th Semester B. Pharmacy. Students participated actively in collected waste from different parts of the campus, helping us achieve the goal of having a clean campus. In addition, a Mosquito eradication drive was also performed, where students cleared accumulate water in different parts of the campus, and disinfectants were sprayed for elimination of mosquito larvae. An awareness class was organized in the Seminar Hall led by Mr Salim V (Junior Health Inspector, FHC Kizhattur). He explained the necessity for sanitation and mosquito eradiation drives. His lucid explanation about different kinds of mosquitoes, the common diseases they spread and methods of eliminating the source of such mosquitoes was received well by students. He also added some important points about Project Indradhanush towards improving Vaccination Coverage, and “DRY DAY” – a campaign by the state government to eliminate dry waste at source. His session was followed by a small discussion and feedback. The events concluded with a plan to create a roadmap for establishing a Clean and Green Campus.

Environment day celebration – Harithakam 2K23

Nature club in association with NSS have organized world environment day celebration “Harithakam 2K23 – Preserving the health healing the earth” on 5th June 2023. The programme was conducted in ACP Campus. The programme was inaugurated by Principal Dr. T N K Suriyaprakash by planting medicinal plants in the medicinal garden of ACP. Dr. Jai Ganesh, HOD of Department of Pharmacognosy briefed about the importance of planting trees for preserving the future. Staffs and students of various semesters attended the programme.

Campus bird count

Udyaan nature club organized a campus bird count and a talk on importance of bird watching as a part of great backyard bird count 2023. The campus bird count started at 6.30 am with a bird walk from Al Shifa college campus to Maniyarini Kadavu, Edayattur with 15 students from 18th batch B.Pharm under the guidance of Dr. Prasanth S S, Professor and HOD, Department of Pharmaceutical analysis and Ms. Krishnapriya Anil, Assistant Professor, Department of Pharmacology. The students counted about 27 different birds and they also got a chance to see a migratory bird called Indian paradise fly catcher. Followed by bird walk, Dr. Prasanth S S delivered a talk on “Bird watching – around us” in the seminar hall of ACP, which emphasized on the importance of bird watching and different variety of birds around us. 50 students from 18th B.Pharm attended the programme.

GO GREEN 2022

Al shifa college of pharmacy conducted GO GREEN 2022 in association with Kizhattur grama panchayath which is a Swachh Bharath mission. The activity was inaugurated by Smt. Jameela Chaliyathodi, President of Kizhattur grama panchayath. . It was a two days programme, students of 19th B.Pharm conducted various activities and collectively cleaned area surrounding Akkaparamb. One group of students went to PHC Poonthanam and they cleaned and painted trolleys. The second group painted Akkaparamb bus stop and the other group cleaned the premises of bus stop. The bus stop was painted creatively which includes handprints and cartoon characters.the work in PHC was under the guidance of hospital staffs.

World Ozone Day Programme

A programme on World Ozone Day was conducted by udyaan with the students of second year D.Pharm (17th batch). The programme was inaugurated by Dr. T N K Suriyaprakash, Principal. The programme was aimed at spreading message on the conservation of ozone layer. The programme started with a message from principal. He motivated the students for planting more trees and make it as a part of their life. The growing concern over the ozone layer was well addressed by the vice principal in his speech. Further Dr. Smitha Rani, D. Pharm course coordinator congratulated all the students who have worked efficiently for the success of the programme. Students presented various posters regarding the conservation of Ozone
Layer. A seminar has also been presented by the student representative. She described about various causes for the depletion of ozone layer and ways to overcome it. The programme was ended up with a quiz competition and distribution of prizes for the winners.

Environment day celebration – Harithakam 2K22

Udyaan nature club in association with NSS have organized world environment day celebration – Harithakam 2K22. The programme was conducted in ACP Campus. One of the diploma student briefed about the importance of celebrating world environment day. Welcome speech was given by Principal Dr. T N K Suriyaprakash and inaugural adress was given by the chief guest Smt. Jmeela Chaliyathodi, Grama Panchayath president, Kizhattur. She planted a mangosteen sapling in ACP campus and inaugurated the ceremony, followed by that Principal, Vise principal, ward member, teaching staffs and students from first year diploma planted about 300 saplings such as gooseberry, custard apple, bamboo and chikoo in various parts of the campus. Vote of thanks was given by vice principal Mr. Junaise V.

Online nature photography contest

Udyaan nature club has organized an online nature photography contest on the theme “Back to nature make the future” aimed to provide a platform to showcase the photographic talent of students. Participants were requested to upload their photographs in the mail id of udyaan without any editing. About 20 students participated in the online contest and the winners of the contest were declared after judgment by the panel of judges. The pictures were beyond stunning with variety ideas and professionalism. Fathima Rinsha K, 19th B. Pharm got first prize , Diya Elizabeth Manoj, 10th Batch Pharm D got second prize and Inam Ul Haq from 20th Batch B.Pharm got third prize. Consolation prize was given for some of the best photographs. All the winners are provided with certificates by Principal Dr. T N K Suriyaprakash and e-certificates are given for all the participants.
